How this is calculated
This uses the standard Reg T overnight margin requirement (50% initial margin, meaning up to 2x your equity in marginable stock), which is unchanged by the 2026 pattern day trader rule update. The 4x intraday figure below is a common broker convention, not a FINRA-mandated number — FINRA eliminated the pattern day trader rule that used to formalize it, effective June 2026 (18-month broker phase-in through October 2027), so treat 4x as a typical starting point and confirm your own broker's actual intraday buying power.
Overnight max position value equals your equity times 2. Intraday day-trading max (for context, using the common 4x convention) equals your equity times 4.
If your position value at the end of the day is above the overnight max, that excess is roughly what a broker would typically require you to close before the close, or you risk a day-trading buying power call the next session.
Brokers can and do apply house requirements stricter than the regulatory minimum, and some securities carry higher margin requirements than standard marginable stock. Verify your own broker's specific overnight requirement.
This tool does not know your actual open positions, margin category, or broker's house rules, only the numbers you enter.
Risk & liability disclaimer: This calculator applies the standard Reg T 50%% overnight margin requirement and a common 4x intraday buying power convention. The 4x figure was formerly tied to FINRA's pattern day trader rule; FINRA eliminated that rule effective June 2026 (broker phase-in through October 2027), so 4x is now a typical broker practice rather than a guaranteed regulatory number. It does not reflect your specific broker's house requirements, which can be stricter. This calculator produces a mathematical estimate based on the inputs provided.
