Does the pattern day trader rule still apply to my account?

Rule change, June 2026: FINRA eliminated the old 4-day-trades-in-5-days / $25,000 minimum pattern day trader rule and replaced it with a new "intraday margin" standard. Brokers have until October 20, 2027 to fully switch over, so which rule applies to your account right now depends on your specific broker's implementation status.

Check your broker's margin disclosures or ask support directly if you're not sure. Most brokers are announcing this change as they roll it out.

Total equity in the margin account, not just cash.

Count round trips (buy and sell of the same security same day) in the trailing 5 business day window. Only relevant if your broker still uses the old rule.
