How this is calculated
Loan amount equals your total position cost, purchase price times shares, minus the cash you paid.
Margin call price equals your loan amount divided by your shares multiplied by one minus your maintenance margin requirement. This is the price where your equity in the position equals the maintenance requirement, the point where a broker can issue a margin call.
25% is the standard FINRA and NYSE minimum maintenance margin requirement, but individual brokers often set a higher house requirement, sometimes significantly higher on volatile stocks. Use your broker's actual number, not just the regulatory minimum.
Brokers can liquidate positions once a margin call is triggered, sometimes without advance notice, so this price is not a soft warning line, it can be the point where the decision leaves your hands.
This calculates a single leveraged stock position in isolation. It does not account for other positions, cash, or cross-margining elsewhere in your account, and it does not model options margin, which works differently.
