How this is calculated
A pip is 0.0001 of an exchange rate for most currency pairs, and 0.01 for pairs where the quote currency is Japanese yen.
When USD is the quote currency (pairs like EUR/USD), the pip value in USD equals pip size multiplied by position size, since the quote currency is already US dollars and no conversion is needed.
When USD is the base currency (pairs like USD/CAD or USD/JPY), the pip value is first calculated in the quote currency (pip size × position size), then divided by the current exchange rate to convert it into USD.
Standard lot equals 100,000 units, mini lot equals 10,000 units, and micro lot equals 1,000 units. Enter the exact number of units you're trading rather than the lot count.
Cross pairs where neither currency is USD, such as EUR/GBP or EUR/JPY, need a second conversion step that this calculator doesn't cover. Check your broker's own pip value tool for those pairs.
Once you know your pip value, multiply it by your planned stop distance in pips to see the dollar risk on the trade, the same way you'd use a dollar risk per share for a stock position.
