How this is calculated
Moving averages smooth price over a chosen number of periods to show the underlying trend. A simple moving average (SMA) weights every period equally; an exponential moving average (EMA) weights recent periods more heavily.
Dollar distance equals current price minus the moving average value you enter. Percent distance divides that difference by the moving average value.
This tool does not calculate the moving average for you. Enter the value from your own charting platform, along with the period and type for context on the result.
A larger distance means price has moved further from its recent average, which some traders watch as a caution flag against chasing an already-extended move. It does not predict whether price pulls back, continues, or does neither.
Risk & liability disclaimer: This calculator performs simple arithmetic on the current price and moving average value you enter. It does not calculate the moving average itself and does not access live market data.
