How much smaller should my position be for a multi-day swing trade than for a day trade with the same dollar stop?

Enter Your Trade

The stop distance you'd use if this were a day trade you closed the same session.

How much wider a move could realistically happen overnight or over a weekend before your stop can actually fill, as a percent of your intraday stop distance. A stock's overnight ATR relative to its intraday ATR is one way to estimate this.

How this is calculated

  • A stop-loss order sitting on a multi-day swing trade is not guaranteed to fill at your stop price. Price can move past it before the market opens or before your order is triggered, especially around news or earnings.
  • This tool widens your intraday stop distance by the buffer percentage you enter, then sizes your position against that wider effective stop, instead of your tighter intraday stop distance.
  • The result is a smaller share count for the same dollar risk budget than a same-stop day trade would use, since the position now has to survive a bigger realistic worst-case move.
  • This does not guarantee your actual loss will be capped at your risk budget. A large enough overnight move can still exceed even a widened stop distance.
