How this is calculated
This uses the standard margin of error formula for a proportion: required trades equals the confidence z-score squared, multiplied by win rate times loss rate, divided by your desired margin of error squared.
A win rate estimate from a small number of trades can easily be off by a wide range. Fewer logged trades means a wider true range around whatever win rate you have so far.
This treats each trade as an independent, identically distributed event, which is a simplification. Trading results can cluster by market regime, so treat this as a floor on sample size, not proof that an edge is stable across time.
A tighter desired margin of error or a higher confidence level both increase the number of trades required.
Win rates of exactly 0% or 100% are adjusted slightly inward for this calculation, since the formula breaks down at the extremes with a small sample.
